Know Before You Go

About Lakshadweep

India's smallest Union Territory and its only coral atoll chain — a living, breathing marine paradise tucked in the Arabian Sea.

Geography & Formation

Lakshadweep lies 200–440 km off India's southwestern Malabar coast in the Laccadive Sea. The archipelago comprises 12 atolls, 3 coral reefs, and 5 submerged banks. These are coral atolls built atop the Lakshadweep-Chagos Ridge — formed over millennia by tiny coral polyps. The shallow turquoise lagoons cover approximately 700 sq km, containing some of the world's most intricate underwater ecosystems.

People & Culture

Of the 36 islands, only 10 are inhabited with a total population of around 64,000. The people are predominantly Muslim, with a rich maritime heritage. Malayalam is the main language. The cuisine is defined by seafood and coconut — try rayereha (red tuna curry), sannath (coconut tuna curry), and fresh tuna preparations with Malabar parotta.

Marine Biodiversity

Lakshadweep boasts extraordinary marine life — over 600 species of marine fish, 52 species of crabs, 101 species of birds, and thriving green sea turtle colonies. The coral reefs are among the healthiest in India. Dolphins are frequently spotted on inter-island boat rides. Lakshadweep received the National Eco-Tourism Award in 1997 for its commitment to sustainable tourism.

Tourism Access & Rules

Only a handful of islands are open to tourists: Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy and Thinnakara. An entry permit is mandatory for all visitors — your tour operator arranges this on your behalf. Alcohol is banned on all inhabited islands; Bangaram is an exception. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited across the islands.

The Islands You'll Visit

Agatti — The gateway, home to the only airport. Stunning lagoon and coral reef. Bangaram — Uninhabited 120-acre paradise ranked among the world's best getaways. Thinnakara — Famous for its historic lighthouse and shipwreck. Kalpitty — Pristine islet with glass-bottom boat exploration and snorkelling over vibrant coral gardens.

Water Sports & Activities

Lakshadweep is India's premier destination for water sports. The calm, clear lagoons are ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, and glass-bottom boat rides. The Bangaram coral reef, Kavaratti's lagoon, and Thinnakara's Spaceship Wreck are top dive sites. Dolphin watching from boats is a near-guaranteed experience on any inter-island journey.
