Kerala to the
Himalayas

Spiti Valley sits between India and Tibet at a mean elevation of 12,500 ft. Locals have called it the Middle Land for centuries. Geologists trace its rock formations back 540 million years. Monasteries here predate most modern nations.

The valley floor is cold desert. The night sky, free of all light pollution, shows more stars than most people see in a lifetime. Chandratal Lake glows at 14,100 ft. The world's highest post office sits at 14,400 ft in a village of 84 people.

This 12-day expedition is built for Kerala travelers starting at sea level. The Shimla entry route provides four days of gradual ascent before Spiti proper begins. A DTI medical team monitors every traveler through every altitude jump.

Altitude Profile — Day by Day

Why Enter via Shimla?

Kerala travelers on the Manali route face a 13,000 ft jump in a single day. The Shimla route spreads that climb across four days — dramatically reducing AMS risk.

✓ Shimla Entry
Recommended

  • Gradual: 0 → 7,200 → 8,900 → 11,345 → 12,500 ft
  • Lower AMS risk for South Indian travelers
  • Bonus: Sangla Valley, Chitkul, Kalpa
  • Road open from early June onwards

Manali Entry
Alternative

  • Jumps to 13,000+ ft within one day
  • Atal Tunnel often closed in early June
  • Shorter road distance to Kaza
  • Best for July–September only
